First Look at Google Offline Mail

Although I got a bit late, but I finally tried google's offline mail system yesterday and my first response was...

What's there in it and why would I use this?

For me its nothing more than a very limited copy of Outlook or for that matter any mail client. What we get after all the synchorinizing is an offline copy of mails and settings and the option to create mails and keep them in outbox.

As far as I can see Google is on the way down, they have lost the plot and their USP of uniqueness. After all we don't wan't half baked products like Google Offline or Google Chrome.

My advise would be to not use google offline as It is shear waste of time; nothing more.

Is getting on Top in Google really this tough?

Now this is a question all of you always wanted to know. Let me present my point of view on this.

As per Google is concerned, they have set up their guidelines fair and clear. They ask you to design your website as per their standards and they will place it their listings. But  due to huge competition sites rarely do find their intended positions.

The whole process of improving & maintaining website's listing positions in Search engine result pages (SERPs) can be viewed in two different lights.

1) As every Johnny-come-late "SEO Experts" claims:

If you Google for SEO expert, you will find numerous of people claiming to be the best in this field and ready to take your site up in the listings with out any problems. What they will ask for is around 1.5 lacs to 2.0 lacs INR. Ask them for security (if the listing do not appear) they would sulk down. I'm not trying to say that they will not work for you or you will not gain any think from this transaction. According to these guys SEO is a process involving some rocket science which is known to them only and they will not disclose it to you.

2) Natural SEO Process: Don't confuse it with "Organic Search". To the brighter side I have seen one of the leading SEO experts from Delhi promoting this view of mine. Although I will not name him as he is a senior but you can find him on #1 by goggling SEO Delhi.

According to me you have to just pay the SEO some amount to work and reconstruct your site as per Google standards. The amount would be any think around 20-30K and in return don't AK for any type of surety. What you will get is a website as the visitors wants and as the spiders would love to crawl.

After getting this done, get your website submitted in Google, and start the more effective link building process. Use forums answers people queries related to your own field, leave your link as a signature. Write articles post them to eZines build links with signatures. Start a blog and keep posting new happening from you field and your company. If you want this done pay the SEO fro link building (manual) and for article posting. If you're not so good in writing hire a content writer, give him briefs and get yourself great articles with your thoughts.

SEE YOU ON GOOGLE!!!

How to create a bad website and frustrate your visitors?

The first question coming to your mind; why would I read this? Simple read this and compare whether you are frustrating your visitors or not.

Some of the most frustrating things in a website would be:

  1. Multi Color Text and Links: I have seen a lot of clients with the attitude "If I can, I will". I know you have a range of more than a million colors to display on your webpage but it is advisable to not do this. First of all it distract user from reading on what's written on the page. You should keep yourself limited to at most two to three colors for headings, text and links. It should match the background or contrast it.

Secondly, there are numerous resolutions, screen sizes and browsers available in the market mark my word, all of them display colors differently, so using color to display your message is not a good choice.

  2. Non - uniform link structure: I have seen many websites with non uniform link structure. What I mean by this is the fact when you go from one page to another, links pop up in new places. Link structure should always follow main menu--> sub menu --> sub-submenu. Further classifications if necessary should be done using separate folders. Just observe any web design company website to have a glimpse of this. User will look for more links (if outside text)at the places he recognize you will be providing the links in. He will not scan the entire page for the links.
  3. Slow loading websites: This can be the most frustrating part of a website. If the website loads slowly, you are bound to loose all your visitors. Nobody will wait for your message as there are many others ready to serve them. When on Internet you are competing with the whole world, because visitors compare sites outside of the work domain.

Hope you are not frustrating your visitors.

Why you should go for website redesign?

The title of the post is the biggest question facing website owners here in Delhi, INDIA. A lot of clients when proposed a redesign argues, why should I go for this? What I will get out of this? Theses questions are obvious and should be answered before continuing with such web design projects.

Taking one at a time. WHY?

Normally a why leads to another few but here the case is a bit simple. You have a website or a shopping cart, it is working fine as you are getting nearly the amount of revenue you initially asked for.  Now you want to increase the revenue as anybody would.

Think what the visitors want? Are they going to be satisfied by the same information again and again? Your answer would probably be NO. So trying giving them a new fee, make them visit a new and fresh website. Change the presentation of your products. If possible add some new features missing from your website.

Moreover there is no harm in doing it, but for giving few bucks to the Website Designer.

Now, Let us look at WHAT?

Now if are considering going for it, then you should now what we are hoping for. We are looking at more revisits as even the laziest internet user would visit once he comes to know that a good website has launched something new.  Secondly, but more importantly search engine would love you for this. If done in the right manner it will boost your search engine listings. But remember to present link to your old web pages also (at least for some time) for the one who is still in love with your old website.

How to communicate this change to your visitors?

This is an important part of your website redesign process and should not be overlooked. If you are following this blog then you would have the email list ready. Mark my word this would go on to be the most clicked newsletter from your website. What I'm trying to say is, once your website redesign is done; launch an email campaign, to communicate with all your subscribers letting them know that you have launched something new and interesting.

A Pretty Face is not enough for your website

Hard to believe but when it comes to website; it is actually true that "a pretty face is not enough for your website".

For starters, website is not meant to display the awesome web design, if so then it will help the web designer more than to you. For being a success online you need to understand how people use websites and what they want on them.

You may think that as a layman, is it your job to decide what the user want? But, think for a minute you yourself visit a lot of websites daily. Out of them all, which you prefer and which you leave? You must have got your answer yourself.

Let me elaborate this, a good website should

  • Present information clearly as required

When a user visits your website s/he is looking for information about the service / product you have on offer. Your website should contain all the information relevant to your service / product. You must present yourself as the true expert of your field. But nobody will believe it just because you said so (as you are not Mr. Amitabh Bachan Wink). So how do it? It can be done easily by sharing some information related to your field that only experts can know and offer it free of cost.

  • Start collecting email addresses

Email marketing is (still) the backbone major internet marketing campaigns. It has been the king of Online Promotion and will remain so. So join the bandwagon, it will only help. Offer updates to your visitor on the products they are interested in and ask for their email for the newsletters to reach them. Never forget to follow the can-spam policy and remember to add an unsubscribe link to all your email news letters.

  • Always provide a search box on your website

Normally people leave a website because they can't find the information they were looking for. In most of the cases information sought after is actually present on the website but they fail to find it. It is a common problem. BUT it is your problem, not of the person visiting your site because there are thousands other ready to help them. So remember always go for a search button on your website thereby multiplying the changes that a visitor will find on your website what they want.

What is that Browser Compatibility thing the Web Designer was talking about?

Web Browser compatability is the capability of a website to adapt to different browser and to hold its outlook and functionality in different browsers. Due to differnece im implementation and adaption of various design procedures by different web browser companies some websites fail to hold their layout or will not load in few browsers.

  • Then how it may effect my website?

  • I use 'Browser A'  and it is the best, so why should I care about others?

  • Only Web Designers should care about this....

You may also have similar issues in your mind, but believe me it is not the case.
As a website owner you are entitled to think about this.

Today Web browser market (INDIAN scene) is divided amongst two major players; IE and Mozilla Firefox. Even not for all making your website compatabile with these two browsers is a must for every business.

Think what may happen to your ground breaking website design if it do not load accurately on the browser your visitor is using. Your business image will be ruined instantly. When it comes to web browsers you need to think out of box.

Web Design Predictions for 2009

I've been thinking about what might lie ahead for web designers in 2009. Here are a few educated guesses predictions.

Hand drawn web sites

Hand drawn will continue to remain a popular web design style through much of 2009, but will start to die off later in the year as designers start to see it as being very '2008.'

Mobile web design

Mobile web use will still be a small percentage for most web sites. However, it will continue to grow and highly trafficked web sites will be expected to have an 'iPhone version.'

Web designers who wish to remain on the cutting edge will enable their sites for mobile use by creating streamlined versions for mobile devices, even those these devices will increasingly have fully functional web browsers.

Social media

In 2009 it won't be enough to simply create a web site for a client.

Web designers will need to implement a farther reaching strategy that includes the main social media web sites. For example, creating Facebook, MySpace, and Twitter pages for a customer or product.

They will also be required to set up ways to automatically distribute content to and from this network of sites as well.

JavaScript libraries

Thanks to the popularity and ease of use of JavaScript libraries such as JQuery and MooTools, more and more web sites will add interactive touches and effects for good and for ill.

Signs of over-saturation in the use of these techniques will start to show towards the end of the year with a backlash regarding their use arising from some designers.

However, they will continue to be hugely popular.

Online video

Site owners will increasingly want to engage their visitors with video which will be delivered via Flash.

Web designer company will need to know how to create pages and channels on popular online video sites such as YouTube and Vimeo.

They will also need to know how to deploy video on their own web sites, employing the sorts of social media features that users expect such as ratings, comments and sharing.

Interaction design

With more and more people using web apps and interactive widgets, web designers who are expert (or even competent) at interaction or UI design will be highly in demand.

Indeed, as web sites in general become more interactive they will become much more difficult to design and build as the user experience becomes vastly more complex.

During the design process, web designers will need to be able to show not just how something looks, but how it works.

Web 2.0 Proving to be a Boon for Search Engine Optimization

Usage of web 2.0 has boosted in past few years right from its origination in 2004 by O’Reilly Media. It can be termed as second generation web usage strategies for easier social networking, online communication and interaction as well as hosting services for better collaboration.

Earlier seeking information was the main purpose of the web surfers, but now it has shifted to being more interactive and communicative in nature. This trend is increasing even though the basic machinery for web functioning has not changed.

Gone are the days when for an ecommerce website only selling and delivering of goods was on priority. The trend demands attracting the target customers with original applets that are capable enough to amuse the visitors.

In order to ensure that the visitors come back to your website, well framed strategy is required. For social networking websites, ecommerce sites, video sharing sites and so on web 2.0 platforms is the ultimate rescuer in this hard competitive times. Most of the discovery done by you is depended on the search channel. It aids in growing the popularity level and visibility of your website.

Blogs and wikis are web 2.0 content management systems that essentially do optimal search engine optimization. Blogs are favorite for Google search engine, they have replaced age old sources of communication like user groups, product reviews, guest books, etc. The reason behind blogs and wikis being so favorite among users is, they are logically search engine optimized content. The content here is richer, have better interlinks, semantically strong roots and updated regularly.

Experts suggest to convert your regular blogging into corporate blogging and the glossary of terms into wiki in order to make your website ahead of times. These blogs and wikis have the advantage of expanding your existing search channel approach and make new users your customers. The new and old clients and prospects can increase your online business profits.

Web 2.0 has certain adornments like widgets, Flash, pod casts, AJAX and video that can adversely hamper your website’s overall ranking in the search engine spiders. These features can confuse the search engine spiders as these elements cannot be scrolled by them. But if you want to use the web 2.0 elements for better conversions, increased customer satisfaction and greater usability, then you have to control the mirror sites, RSS, syndication services and XML for regular website traffic.

The Back Button - How People Use Web Sites

The Back Button is one of the most important Web buttons on any Web page, and yet most Web designers don't think of it when they're building their pages. In fact, it's very common to see "back to home" or "back to start" or just "back" links built into the pages that they are designing. But unless these links have built in logic that knows exactly where the customer was before they clicked (like the browser back button does), then these links are just a sham - a guess at the path that the customer took through your site.

How Most People Browse the Web

Most people come to a Web page and skim. If it doesn't look like what they needed to learn or wanted to read about, they leave. And the quickest route out of any Web site is, you guessed it, the Back Button.

In fact, most people don't even realize they're doing it. They sit at a Web site with their mouse hovering over the scroll-bar area, just in case they need to scroll the page. Then, unless something really interesting comes along, they pull their mouse up to the upper left side of the browser and go back to their previous location.

Web Designers Can Impact This

Negatively!

You might be thinking, "but I don't want them to leave." And many designers do think that. So web design companies do things like pop their site in a chrome-less window (ie. no back button). I've even seen sites actually go so far as to close down the original window and open the site in a window without controls. This is annoying. And it doesn't make your site more usable, it makes it less usable. Because the standard methods that your customers use to get around are blocked. Once they figure out how to get out of your site, they'll leave, and not return.

Don't take away the back button from your readers. You won't stop them from leaving, but you might stop them from coming back.

Take Advantage of the Back Button

Now, I am not, by any means, advocating that you suggest in your text things like "click the back button in your browser to go back." Most people know that already, and your saying it sounds, well, stupid at best. Instead, be aware that your customers want to use the back button, and plan for it. For example:

  • Place your branding up near the back button
While most people don't really need to look when they're clicking back, placing your brand up there will get it more attention when they leave.
  • Make items in that area clickable
Your logo should be clickable, but other text elements that are in the upper left area of your page should be clickable as well. That way, if they miss the back button, they might go somewhere else useful on your site.
  • Use server logs to find out where they came from
If you know what they're going back to, you can address that right on the page, perhaps even with dynamic elements that only display when they come from that location. For example, someone coming from a search engine might not know the best ways to search your site. If you include details like how to search on the pages when they come from a search engine you might get them to stay longer.
